The Couple

Liz, a program manager for the government, and Tom, a high school physics teacher, met working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

The Proposal

After dating for a year and a half, they traveled to Hatteras, South Carolina, for a week together. “After a few days of relaxation we were about to start making dinner when Tom suggested we make sesame seed encrusted tilapia, the first meal we had ever made together,” Liz remembers. “As per usual we divided up the tasks for preparing the meal when Tom assigned me the task of coating the tilapia with sesame seeds. Little did I know there was a little surprise waiting for me in the bottom of the Sesame Seed bag. As I start to pour the seeds onto a plate I noticed we never thawed the tilapia! I suggested we enjoy a glass of wine while we wait, but Tom could barely contain himself when he insisted we get back to prepping.” At this point, Tom didn’t know if the ring was already on the plate covered in seeds or still in the bag so he suggested Liz pour out the remaining seeds. “Me not knowing anything disagreed with Tom insisting that so many seeds weren’t needed. As I secretly placed the rest of the Sesame seeds to the side, Tom panicked and figured he was going to pick another place and time to pop the question. “As I start to coat each piece of tilapia, the pile of seeds slowly dwindled away without me knowing a thing. Right up until I removed the last piece of tilapia from the pile and notice a slight sparkle. My first reaction was that a bottle cap had made its way into the seeds, which instantly worried me until I proceeded to pick out a very heavy sparkly engagement ring.” As Liz turned around in complete shock, Tom was down on one knee and said, “Finally, will you marry me?”

The Location

Liz and Tom chose to have their ceremony on the Tavern Ballroom Lawn at Chesapeake Bay Beach Club and their reception in the Tavern Ballroom. “After looking into several venues, we decided that the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club was the perfect venue. Not only does it have amazing views, architecture, and an incredibly accommodating staff, but the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club is a one-stop shop. All catering, decorating, and coordinating is included in every wedding package and makes controlling your budget and stress levels so much easier!”

The Dress

It only took one outing for Liz to find her wedding gown. When they started shopping, she wanted to find the perfect ball gown and the perfect fitted dress and then make her decision from there. After finding her perfect ball gown at one shop, they moved on in search of the perfect fitted dress so that she could choose between the two. At the second store, she found a trumpet gown from Essense of Australia that she fell in love with. They knew nearly immediately that it was the one.

The Beer Pairings

Liz and Tom had an incredible menu of appetizers including slow roasted beef brisket sliders, smoked bison sloppy Joes, bacon and cheddar buffalo style tater tot skewers, and macaroni and cheese in a bacon cup. Each appetizer was paired with a beer for their guests to taste.

The Late Night Snack

After the dinner was served, the couple had a Boardwalk Fries station set up to keep their guests energized while they danced the night away.

The Favorite Dance

The couple loved celebrating with their family and friends. Liz says that if she had to name a single moment, it would be the last song of the night. “The DJ played Ho Hey by The Lumineers and every guest gathered around us on the dance floor in a big circle while we shared one last dance. When we asked for everyone to join us, they one by one hugged onto us and swayed back and forth until the song was over. It was one of those completely unplanned, magical moments that made the night more special. What a way to end the night!”

The Happily Ever After

The couple is happy and enjoying married life now that there is no more wedding planning. “Amen to that,” they joke.
